Metal Gear 1987 Remake Gamejam (Rubijam 2023)

We have recreated half of the first level. The game features an elite soldier operation who must infiltrate enemy territory to counter a terrorist threat, using discretion and reflexes, with the ultimate goal of destroying Metal Gear, a bipedal tank with nuclear strike capability.

To represent this, we've added our personal touch by modernizing it in a realistic style reminiscent of the era's gaming standards. Since this level of detail wasn't feasible when the game was originally released in 1987, we've rendered and recreated more detailed assets, incorporating lighting and post-processing work, while maintaining the same art direction, ambiance, and graphic style. We've also enhanced details to guide the player through their adventure, indicating the path to follow and making the environment more dynamic, such as adding tire tracks on the ground, cliché posters on walls, and letter conversations between two NPCs.

Furthermore, to stay true to the original game, we've retained its core mechanics that made Metal Gear the iconic infiltration game it is. To achieve this, we've remastered mechanics such as AI player detection, enhancing it by giving AI characters a headlamp to indicate their line of sight to the player. We've also kept elements like retrieving mission items to progress in the game, and the ability for the player to hide in a cardboard box, just as in the original game. Additionally, we've chosen to retain an unrealistic element present in the original game, where entering a truck would reveal an absurdly spacious interior, which we've replicated to retrieve one of the necessary mission items.
